TONGKAT ALI
Eurycoma
Longifolia Jack or Tongkat Ali (literally means Ali’s walking stick in Malay)
as it is popularly called in Malaysia, is a small tree that grows to no taller
than 12 meters. It has narrow
leaves about 5 -20cm long and 1.5-6cm wide with pale green color at its lower
surface, flowers that are heterosexual and roots of high medicinal values. It
is called “Piak” in Singapore, “Tung Saw” in Thailand and “Pasak Bumi”
in Indonesia.
There
have been quite a few studies with this plant. The effects of eurycoma were
studied on the libido of sexually experienced male rats after dosing them with
200, 400 and 800 mg/kg body weight twice daily for 10 days. Results showed that
eurycoma produced a dose-dependent increase in mounting frequency of the treated
animals. Further studies also showed that eurycoma promoted the growth of both
ventral prostate and seminal vesicles.
Besides being famed as aphrodisiac, those who have consumed Tongkat Ali also claim that it vitalizes the body, helps digestion and prevents tiredness, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
